With the emphasis on fun rather than the result, club umpires James Tribble and Chris Olive entered into the spirit by awarding penalties of a shot of port to those old enough to partake throughout the game. What was pleasing for the club was the collection of fine young talent coming up through the ranks. Greg Seward and Dan Wheedon being two such examples. Chris Slattery continues to impress week on week and Bobby Brown at the tender age of 19 was considered one of the more experienced players in the U35 team. Graham Pidgeon, who has impressed recently for the 1st XI, has cited the fresh approach of the current 1st XI captain for his good run of form. The old hand, who has now played for the club for close to 30 years, regularly scoring 60 goals a season in his prime gave a reasonable demonstration of the game to those youngsters that consider him a role model. Baby-faced Andrew Welch is now a regular for the O35 team and looked to control the game from midfield alongside club captain Keith Baker. John Goodwin was ever dependable in defence with Brian Headboard. The game saw Gerald Skinner neglecting his usual umpiring duties to take up a position on the left wing, even advancing into potential scoring positions but a lack of service from his team mates did not assist his cause. Jonny Slott, a regular in the 1st XI before going to University played in the game, as did Dan Devine who has recently returned from having nasal cosmetic surgery. Andrew Joy was awesome in midfield. Unfortunately Scott Rowson was unavailable through injury. Hockey was certainly the winner after an enjoyable afternoon’s game which encapsulated the club’s fine tradition for competitive, yet fun and friendly sport. Training will resume on 6 January at Ottery Sports Centre. Paintball Extravaganza! Hosted by men's 1st XI sponsor Adrenalin Games, see here for details.
